Gerrit Rietveld’s Stelman Chair Reissued

The Steltman chair, designed by Gerrit Rietveld has been reissued by furniture brand Rietveld Originals to mark the iconic design’s fiftieth anniversary.

The design is broken up into three simple shapes that appear to rest up against and on top of each other. These sections are all upholstered in leather, the original material used to cover the chair

Thanks for the Sun colour-changing lamps by Arnout Meijer

Rotterdam designer Arnout Meijer designed the Thanks for the Sun series in response to the need for light that fulfils different roles – providing bright white light for working and aiding concentration, and a warmer, more soothing hue to help people relax before bed.

The colour temperature of this series of LED lamps can be adjusted to create different moods throughout the day.

Meijer says “When you think about a lamp design, you design everything but the light: you design the shade, construction, base, etc but in the end you just screw the light in, I wanted to turn that around and let light play the main character. So I wanted to make a lamp series where the design and the shape was about the light.”

Each of the acrylic lamps incorporates an inner and outer strip of LEDs that can be adjusted using a dial or slider to change the colour of the light from a bright white to a warmer red or yellow

Dyson Award Nominee – Cortex

Cortex 01Cortex 02 Cortex 03

In November this year the winner of the James Dyson Award for engineering will be announced, receiving a 30,000 pound award. Out of this years 20 nominations we have selected our favourites to win the award, from a design perspective.

Cortex – a 3D printed cast system for fracture support that brings the centuries old plaster cast into the 21st century. Traditional casts are heavy, clumsy, not waterproof, irritating, itchy and smell plus they cannot be recycled. The Cortex cast revolutionises the process by creating a strong, lightweight, ergonomic, waterproof, ventilated, fully supportive neo cortex that makes use of 3D printing technologies. After 3D scanning the limb, an anatomically correct and tight fitting cast is generated, with localised support in relation to the point of fracture and necessary stress locations. Printed out of a strong recyclable plastic, it results in the reduction of wasted material. With millions of plaster casts being made and thrown away each year, the ability to recycle the casts plays an important role.

In November this year the winner of the James Dyson Award for engineering will be announced, receiving a 30,000 pound award. Out of this years 20 nominations we have selected our favourites to win the award, from a design perspective.

Revolights - Unlike traditional bike lights, which project light in only one direction, Revolights cast 360 degrees of illumination, making it much easier for others to sight the rider. This improves safety tremendously, as most nighttime bike-car collisions are due to inadequate side visibility. The patented Revolights bike lighting system consists of two narrow rings of LEDs that mount directly to each wheel using a series of clips and ring spacers.

iOS 7 – Apple

A new chapter for iOS sees a reinvention of the display and user face. Apple challenged themselves to make the iOS 7 simpler, more useful and more enjoyable, whilst retaining familiarity.

iOS 7 introduces great new features like Control Center, AirDrop for iOS, and smarter multitasking. It also makes the things you do every day even easier, faster, and more enjoyable. And while many of the apps look different, the way you do things feels perfectly familiar.

The iOS 7 is due to be released this fall

An installation at Beijing’s 798 arts district, by Shanghai based design office Studio-at-Large, 8 pairs of running shoes were suspended around an illuminated track, suggesting the feet of 8 invisible athletes.

The installation mixed the appearance of some trainers frozen in motion as well as others laying flat, to present the possible different colour combinations of the shoes, with rows of brightly coloured hung t-shirts around the track to represent spectators.
